Saltwater Bay Fishing Port Mansfield and the Laguna Madre
Some people describe saltwater fishing in the Lower Laguna Madre as the Keys of the
Texas gulf coast. Gin clear water, sand and grass covered bottoms await the wade and drift
saltwater anglers who are in search of the lagunas big three. ( speckle trout,
flounder and redfish )
An occasional snook will make an appearance with most guides requesting a photo of the
snook and a live release. This may help to revive a healthy population of this great
species.
Most anglers use light tackle, bait ,spinning and fly fishing equipment to tackle these
species. The gin clear shallows provide the Fly-Fishing enthusiast unlimited wading flats
for their solitude and enjoyment.
Most saltwater bay fishing guides in this area fish from tunnel hulled shallow draft
boats. Now with concerns of damage to aquatic grasses most guides are taking care not to
damage the grasses by operating their boats in too shallow of water. Most of the shallow
draft boats are of the scooter or no side design as shown in the photo on this page. A new
comer to this area will normally show concerns of the boat not having sides , but a quick
assurance by the guide and their patented statement. (If you fall out dont panic
just standup!) and an explanation most of the laguna is 4 deep or less is all
the assurance they need.
